Spinal Cord Injury is a condition resulting from a traumatic blow to the spinal cord which fractures, dislocates, crushes or compresses one or more of your vertebrae. This causes damage to the vertebrae, ligaments or disks of the spinal cord. Spinal cord injury may also occur in patients with arthritis, cancer, inflammation, infections, or disk degeneration of the spine.
Spinal cord injury has grave consequence such as exaggerated reflex activities, intense back or neck pain, uncoordinated body movements, difficulty in balancing or walking, loss of control over bowels and bladder, complete or incomplete paralysis due to loss of movement. The effectiveness of the treatment depends on the promptness of treatment after the injury and the degree of injury. More than often, the patients get access to treatment very late and the damage is already done. Currently there is no treatment for spinal cord injuries because unlike the other parts of the body, spinal cord cannot repair itself. However, Dr. rajput’s Orthopeadic and Stem Cell Research Centre presents a ray of hope to reverse the consequence of spinal cord injuries. He is amongst the pioneers of stem cell transplant surgeons, treating spinal cord injuries in India. The stem cells required for the treatment are obtained from the patient’s own bone marrow (autologous). The purified mesenchymal stem cells are transplanted intrathecally into the injured area of the spine. We obtained remarkable results in treating even the most severe cases of spinal cord injury such as paraplegia and quadriplegia. Marked improvement both, in sensory and motor functions were observed in patients, right after the second dose of treatment, thereby improving the overall quality of life. Testimonials of the patients of spinal cord injury are available in the testimonial section of this website. Dr. Rajput is the best doctor for stem cell therapy in india and his innovative Stem Cell treatment has also opened avenues for other spinal-cord related injuries.
The first step in diagnosing a spinal cord injury is a medical history and physical examination of the patient. The patient's physician might ask questions regarding the details surrounding the time of the injury. The amount of time since the injury is important because spinal cord injury is a medical emergency. The earlier the patient obtains treatment, the better the chances for recovery. Other details of the medical history could include details of any prior neck or back injuries or surgeries, presence of pain in neck or back any weakness in arms or legs, loss of bowel or bladder control, loss of sensation in arms or legs and other previous medical conditions. Physical examination includes testing to see if sensation to touch is intact in the arms and legs as well as testing muscle strength and reflexes in the arms and legs.Patient may be kept in a cervical collar or on a backboard to immobilize them until the physician determines whether or not the patient has a spinal cord injury. X-ray of neck or back can help identify a fracture or dislocation of the vertebrae. These may or may not be present with a spinal cord injury. It is possible to have a spinal cord injury without an injury to the vertebrae. A Computed Tomography (CT) scan is a more advanced imaging test that can give the physician a better view of the vertebrae. CT can identify some injuries to the vertebrae not seen on the plain x-rays. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan is another more advanced imaging study that can identify a spinal cord injury. MRI is better at evaluating the soft tissues including ligaments, intervertebral discs, nerves and spinal cord. The MRI scan also can show evidence of injury within the spinal cord.
After a spinal cord injury is diagnosed the patient might be started on a high dose of steroids. This could help decrease the amount of damage to the spinal cord by reducing inflammation and swelling. There are risks associated with using steroids for spinal cord injury. The patient's doctor can help decide if steroids are appropriate. The use of steroids is only beneficial if they are started within eight hours of the time of injury. Next the patient may be placed in traction or a halo device around the head to try to stabilize the spine and prevent further damage. Many cases of spinal cord injury are treated with surgery. There are two major goals of surgery. Relieve any pressure on the spinal cord. This could involve removing portions of the vertebrae that have broken and are compressing the spinal cord. If the spinal cord is being compressed by tumor, infection or severe arthritis, surgery can be performed to reduce the amount of compression. Stabilize the spine. If the vertebrae are weakened from fracture, tumor or infection, they may not be capable of supporting the normal weight of the body and protecting the spinal cord. A combination of metal screws, rods and plates may be necessary to help hold the vertebrae together and stabilize them until the bones heal
Stem cells have incredible regenerative capacity. The rationale for developing stem cell therapies to treat spinal cord injury is to use stem cells as a source of new cells and the chemical signals that will help prevent further cellular damage, restore axon function by replacing oligodendrocytes, generate new nerve cell or guide the regrowth of severed nerve fibers. A number of different types of stem cells (embryonic stem cells, umbilical cord stem cells, adult neural stem cells, mesenchymal/bone marrow stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells) are currently being studied as potential sources of neurons, glial cells or neurotrophic factors to treat neurological disorders and traumas. Of particular interest are transplantation strategies aimed at using these cells to create oligodendrocytes, which gives myelin sheath coverage to neurons in brain and spinal cord. You dont need to worry about Stem Cell Treatment Cost in India because Dr. Rajput provide best stem cell therapy at an afforable price in Delhi and Mumbai.
Luckily recent clinical trials, using adult stem cells derived from bone marrow of the patients are showing very promising results across the globe. Still a lot of research has to be done to give substantial results in such patients but a ray of hope has become obvious. Scientists have noticed following remarkable points to get the best results in such cases:
